If you're in the middle of a home renovation, you could soon be finding yourself in possession of a lot of leftover broken up concrete. Knowing how to dispose of your concrete can help you get your house back in order after the renovation is complete.
Can you throw away broken up concrete in a dumpster?
Many dumpster rental companies will allow renters to throw away broken up concrete in their dumpsters. However, many companies will require the concrete to be "cleaned." This means that they don't want the concrete to contain any non-concrete items (like bricks or glass), and the concrete itself can't be dirty.
If you're planning to throw away concrete in a dumpster, and the concrete is dirty, you can always try to clean it with a power washer before breaking it up. Once the concrete has been broken up, cleaning it with a power washer is not practical because the concrete will be in many small pieces.
If you can't clean the concrete, can you take it to a landfill or recycling center yourself?
If you have a suitable truck for hauling concrete, many landfills will accept this material, as will recycling centers. Call landfills and recycling centers in your area before hauling the concrete from your home. Your local recycling center may also require the material to be cleaned, so check with them in advance.
You should also check to ensure that your truck is able to handle the load before putting concrete in the truck bed. Your truck will have a cargo limit stated in the owner's manual. Concrete weighs around 150 pounds per cubic foot. To find out how many cubic feet of concrete you have, lay it in a rectangular pile approximately a foot high, then multiply the length times the width times the height. The resulting number is the amount of concrete you have in cubic feet. Once you know how many cubic feet of concrete you have, you can multiply that number by 150 to find out approximately how much your concrete weighs. You can use this information to determine whether or not your concrete is too heavy to fit in your truck bed.
If you're worried that the concrete will weigh too much for your truck, how can you get rid of broken up concrete?
If your concrete is too heavy for your truck, you can either take it to the landfill in batches or you can call a junk removal service. Many junk removal services will be able to take away your concrete easily and in one batch. This will save wear and tear on your truck, and time. For more information, contact a reputable junk removal service in your area. They can give you a quote and set up a time to come haul away your load. Consider contacting The Dump Guy for service.
