Three Easy Ways To Kill Driveway And Pavement Crack Weeds

If you're a homeowner who has been battling weeds growing out of cracks in the patio or driveway, you know how frustrating it can be to keep pulling up the weeds or keep applying herbicides only to find more weeds have taken the old ones' places. You want those weeds gone because not only are they unsightly, but they also can ruin any filler you might put in the cracks. Instead of trying chemical herbicides again, try one of three simple -- and non-toxic -- remedies

Boiling Water (warn about salt)

Fill a kettle with water and bring the water to a rolling boil. Take the kettle outside and carefully pour a small stream of boiling water into the cracks. Do not dump the water, and be sure the water is hitting its intended target. Boiling water will kill any plant it hits, so the last thing you want is the water running off into the bed holding your favorite roses.

You may see variations that include adding salt to the water. While this would work -- the salt will kill the weeds, too -- the salt will also destroy the soil's suitability for gardening by raising the salinity, which is fatal for many plants. That isn't a real concern if you plan to keep your driveway or patio in the same spot for years. But if you have any remodeling plans that might turn part of the patio into a garden bed, for example, avoid using salt.

Vinegar

Whether you use white distilled vinegar or apple cider vinegar, you can give weeds a bath with this liquid and watch them fade quickly. No mixing is required; just pour vinegar into a spray bottle and spray the weeds carefully. As with boiling water, the vinegar can kill what it touches. Spray carefully into the cracks that have weeds, and don't spray on a windy day.

Baking Soda

Pour baking soda -- dry -- into each crack to get rid of weeds. Try pulling the weeds out first (or digging them out) and then adding the soda. You can either pour the baking soda onto the pavement next to the cracks and brush the soda inside, or you can form a small V-shaped funnel by folding a piece of paper. Slowly pour the soda into the V and tap the paper to gradually move the soda into the cracks.

Once the weeds are gone, call paving contractors to fill in the cracks. Do not wait as you don't want additional weed seeds carried on the wind to land in the cracks and create new weeds.
